Overview of Bruxism / Teeth Grinding / Teeth Clenching

Bruxism involves an unconscious grinding, clenching, tapping or tightening of the teeth. "Bruxism" comes from the Greek word "brychein", which means the gnashing of teeth.

Many people will grind their teeth occasionally. However this condition occurs where the person does so excessively and they have lost voluntary control of the behaviour and there are detrimental signs/effects. Bruxism may occur while awake or during sleep and the manner of occurence will affect the approach to treatment.

There can be many unpleasant effects resulting from teeth grinding including: wearing down of the teeth, headaches, pains and spasms in the related muscles, sensitive teeth, disturbed sleep, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, ear ache, jaw pain, to name just some. The unpleasant and loud noises which may result from more active forms of grinding can also disturb other people and possibly cause some tension in relationships.

Research into the causes/origins of bruxism is on-going. There may be a range of factors which contribute to the condition in some individuals, which is why it is important to first seek advice from your dentist and/or doctor. However it is generally believed that in some cases the central cause may be psychological ie: the condition has been precipitated by on-going emotional stress or a specific stressful event. Even if other factors are implicated emotional stress can still be a factor contributing to the condition.

People who experience bruxism should consult their dentist prior to exploring any other treatment approaches. Sometimes people are unaware of the problem until their dentist points it out to them after seeing visible signs. A variety of dental approaches can be applied including the use of an occlusal splint. As bruxism is thought to often have its origins in anxiety/stress/anger which may be at an unconscious level hypnotherapy can often be of help, sometimes in combination with dental approaches, in relieving the condition.

Assessment of Bruxism / Teeth Grinding / Teeth Clenching

An assessment may include some of the following:

  • Considering your own specific motivations for overcoming bruxism/teeth grinding.


  • Discussing any relevant factors from a dental/medical assessment.


  • Identify the onset of teeth grinding and if you are conscious of a particular event(s) in your life which was instrumental in bringing about the condition.


  • Identifying any specific situations/events which trigger bruxism.


  • Considering practical strategies appropriate to you personally which can help you to relax which hypnotherapy can strengthen.


  • Considering practical strategies appropriate to you personally which can help you to be more aware and control bruxism/teeth grinding.


  • Identifying relaxing/calming and relevant successful past general experiences in your life which can be used positively within hypnotherapy.


  • Consider your own perceptions and feelings about yourself.


  • Consideration of how people around you are affecting you.



Programme of Hypnotherapy for Bruxism / Teeth Grinding / Teeth Clenching

Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to help you to overcome bruxism/teeth grinding. This could include:

  • Building upon your motivations for overcoming bruxism/teeth grinding. Positive motivations are an important tool for creating change.


  • If an early experience is relevant we will address this to enable you to let go of any negative emotions ie: anxiety/stess/anger leaving you free to move on.


  • Work to give you more awareness and control over the behaviour.


  • Build up a generally more calm/relaxed/peaceful state of mind.


  • Specific suggestions to relax and calm the relevant muscles.


  • Strengthen positive practical strategies for dealing with bruxism/teeth grinding.


  • Where necessary strengthen your general levels of self-esteem and confidence.


  • Reduce negative thoughts and doubts and reinforce your confidence in your ability to succeed in overcoming bruxism/teeth grinding.


  • If you wish during one of the sessions we will make a recording on CD to complement the live hypnotherapy session for a nominal charge. This will be tailored to your needs and can then be used in your own home to reinforce the work we have done in the "live sessions". This has generally been found to be the best way to produce audio recordings that will be effective.

The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.
