I am a qualified and registered hypnotherapist in Moulton, Northwich, Cheshire, near Chester, Crewe, Runcorn, Warrington and Manchester using hypnosis within hypnotherapy for a wide range of conditions including programmes to help you control or stop drinking alcohol. We are within easy traveling distance of Altrincham, Sale, Lymm, Knutsford, Holmes Chapel, Sandbach, Nantwich, Tarporley, Tarvin, Wilmslow and other towns in the Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire, and Lancashire areas.

While there is no harm for most people in an occasional alcoholic drink, we live in times where alcohol is impacting negatively on the lives of many people. Drinking alcohol is a habit that can easily escalate with consequent costs to our lives: health, finances, personal relationships, our effectiveness and potential in our work and personal lives. Most people with alcohol related health problems would not be diagnosed as "alcoholic" but are people who have regularly drunk in excess of the recommended limits. Problems may not be obvious at first but can emerge after a number of years: various forms of cancer, liver damage, heart attacks, high blood pressure, poor immune system and reduced fertility. There are significant dangers involved in drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Health can also be impacted through weight gains due to the extra calories taken in by drinking, beer, larger, wines and spirits.

There are also many psychological and social costs: fatigue, increased anxiety, depression, poor sleep, poor memory and sexual problems, to mention just a few. The people that I have helped have often spoke about the negative impact on their close personal relationships due to becoming argumentative or aggressive due to the irritabilty and lack of self-control that alcohol can create. Some people have also talked about situations where they have put themselves at physical risk either because they are not in full control of their movements/co-ordination or have put themselves at risk through their behaviour with strangers. Some have spoken about the risks to their employment and career caused by inappropriate behaviour induced by the lower inhibitions resulting from alcohol.

The reasons for occasional drinking turning into habitual excessive drinking are obviously very varied. In an age when stress is on the increase some people slip into habitual drinking as an attempt to relieve stress / unwind after a hard day's work. Needless to say this is not an effective strategy and it is highly desirable to impliment more positive strategies for relieving stress. Others may slip into habitual drinking through work. Some work environments entail many business meals, also involving significant consumption of alcohol. Other work environments encourage social drinking after work. In either case peer pressure can significantly add to the difficulties of controlling alcohol intake. Drinking at home prior to going out for the night to continue drinking is an issue that affects many young people these days. Binge drinking is an extreme version of this.

The above are just some of the problems and issues which excessive habitual drinking can cause. If you wish to read more detail about harmful effects of alcohol with detailed figures you can visit the NHS web pages below:

Harmful Effects of Alcohol

Many people will not be experiencing the more extreme problems mentioned above. However, if you wish to reduce or stop your alcohol intake to bring about positive benefits for your physical, emotional and psychological well being, it makes sense to act sooner rather than later.

A thorough assessment is essential to determine the factors which are affecting you and to devise a programme of hypnotherapy tailored to your individual needs.

Assessment for Hypnotherapy to Control or Stop Drinking Alcohol

An assessment may include some of the following:

  • Identifying past patterns regarding drinking alcohol and types of drink consumed: beer, larger, wine, spirits.

  • Explore any causes/reasons for drinking alcohol.

  • Consider your own specific motivations for reducing or stopping alcohol consumption.

  • Identifying any general factors in your life relevant to drinking alcohol.

  • Identifying particular circumstances when you are more likely to drink.

  • Identifying any current impacts of alcohol upon your life.

  • Consideration of how people around you are affecting you either negatively or positively.

  • Agree targets for controling alcohol intake if not abstinence.

Programme of Hypnotherapy to Control or Stop Drinking Alcohol

Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to control or stop alcohol intake. This could include:

  • Building upon your motivations to control alcohol intake or abstain from alcohol.

  • Address and reframe any underlying causes / reasons for drinking alcohol.

  • Work to give you more awareness and control over the amount of alcohol that you drink.

  • Develop positive practical strategies to enable you to control alcohol intake.

  • If relevant develop alternative positive ways of addessing stress.

  • Build in greater awareness and control over when you know you have had sufficient.

  • Build in alternative responses for those situations/circumstances where you would normally be tempted to drink.

  • Develop inhibition for specific types of alcoholic drink (if you wish).

  • Tackle any underlying causes which are undermining your wish for weight loss / to lose weight.

  • Develop confidence in your new identity as a person who is in control of what they drink.

  • Address any issues relating to peer group pressure and develop strategies to deal with this.

  • Reduce negative thoughts and doubts and reinforce your confidence in your ability to succeed.

  • If you wish during one of the sessions we will make a recording CD / MP3 to complement the live hypnotherapy session for a nominal charge. This will be tailored to your needs and can then be used in your own home to reinforce the work we have done in the "live sessions". This has generally been found to be the best way to produce audio recordings that will be effective.

The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.

The number of sessions required is likely to be three to four depending upon the range and complexity of the issues involved. For full details of my fees please click here.
