Overview of Hypnotherapy and Dentistry

The use of hypnosis within hypnotherapy can be very a effective aid to reduce anxiety and fear about dentistry and make the overall experience much more manageable and comfortable. There are a variety of approaches which hypnotherapists can use depending upon the specific nature of the problem.

People's fears and anxieties around dentists / dentistry may sometimes have their origins in an unfortunate early experience often during childhood, though the start of anxieties can also occur at any time later in our lives. The actual focus of the fears can also vary significantly. Some of the common ones are:

  • fear of pain / sensitivity of the teeth and/or gums or other parts of the mouth eg: roof, tongue.

  • anxiety about injections of analgesia in gums or roof of mouth to numb areas of mouth.

  • fear of having dental instruments in mouth or fear of use of specific instruments: drills, water sprays, suction tubes, etc.

  • anxiety about specific dental procedures: tooth extraction, fillings, crowns, bridges, taking of denture impressions, etc.

  • anxiety about lying back in dental chair and the dentist leaning over to undertake work.

  • anxiety regarding the discomfort caused by the dentist having their fingers in the mouth.

  • fear of gagging

As with other anxieties and fears part of the problem is that once we have experieced fear/anxiety in a particular situation our minds create an association and we come to anticipate the same reaction. This anticipation in itself creates fear and anxiety and we end up with a fear of the experience of fear which can create a vicious circle which it becomes hard to break.

Such fears and anxieties can create a situation where a person is in a state of agitation and anxiety long before a dental visit. The experience of sitting in a dentist's waiting room prior to seeing the dentist can become a traumatic event in itself. In serious cases people can develop a phobia about visiting the dentist. This can result in visits that are too infrequent or total avoidance. In either event the effects on the health of teeth and gums iis detrimental.

A thorough assessment is essential to determine the factors which are affecting you in order to devise a programme of hypnotherapy tailored to your individual needs.

Hypnotherapy Assessment for Anxiety / Fear of Dentistry / Dentist

An assessment may include some of the following:

  • Discussing past experiences of dentistry identifying any specific events which may have contributed to the development of anxiety.

  • Considering your own specific motivations for overcoming your fears / anxieties.

  • Discussing your thoughts and emotions around dental visits and the actual experience of work on your teeth / gums.

  • Identifying specific procedures, instruments used, and experiences that trigger anxiety / fear.

  • Considering practical strategies appropriate to you personally which can help you to relax, feel more comfortable and which hypnotherapy can strengthen.

  • Identifying relaxing/calming and relevant successful past general experiences in your life which can be used positively within hypnotherapy.

Programme of Hypnotherapy to Overcome Anxiety /Fear of Dentistry

Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to help you to overcome the anxieties / fear of dentistry and to build your confidence that the experience can be much more relaxed, comfortable and manageable. This could include:

  • Building upon your motivations for visiting the dentist. Positive motivations are an important tool for creating change.

  • If an early experience is relevant we will address this to enable you to let go of any negative associations leaving you free to move on.

  • Work to give you more awareness and control over your emotions.

  • Replace fearful/anxious thoughts and emotions with calming/relaxing/peaceful ones.

  • Reframe how you perceive, experience and think about the dentistry.

  • Employ strategies and methods to make specific procedures, instruments used, and experiences that have triggered anxiety / fear in the past, a lot more comfortable.

  • Strengthen positive practical strategies for dealing with fear/anxiety.

  • Employ strategies and methods to reduce pain and increase the level of comfort.

  • Reduce negative thoughts and doubts and reinforce your confidence in your ability to succeed in overcoming fears and anxieties.

  • If you wish during one of the sessions we will make an MP3 recording to complement the live hypnotherapy session for a nominal charge. This will be tailored to your needs and can then be used in your own home to reinforce the work we have done in the "live sessions". This has generally been found to be the best way to produce audio recordings that will be effective.

The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.

The number of sessions required is likely to be three to four depending upon the degree of the anxiety. Please see the Hypnotherapy Fees Page for details of fees.
