Overview of Hypnotherapy for Stress Management and Relaxation

In the modern world we find ourselves bombarded by conditions and circumstances which can often build up the levels of stress which we are experiencing almost without our conscious awareness. We often tend to realise that we are under extra stress when we or others notice some changes in our behaviour. We find ourselves experiencing the symptoms of stress eg: feeling tired, lacking in energy, irritable, depressed, or finding that we are lacking our usual enthusiasm/motivation.

We are often not totally conscious of the factors which have brought on the stress. Such factors can be many and varied of course relating to work, home and family life, personal relationships and significant life changes.

The short and long term consequences of stress can be many and varied. The symptoms mentioned above include some of the early physical and emotional symptoms. However it can also have a negative impact on our realtionships, work performance, and our ability to enjoy our lives. Research has shown that it can also have detrimental effects on our physical health if left unchecked. It is therefore important to notice the early signs of stress and do something about it before it builds up and causes too much damage.

We cannot avoid some stress and it is probably desirable for us all to have a little in our lives as it generates that extra adrenalin which drives us to give a better performance. However too much has the opposite effect and is unhealthy. As well as taking steps to moderate the stress levels which we are under, part of the solution lies in finding more successful ways to respond to and manage stress. People vary in the amount of stress that they can cope with and how successfully they respond partly due to differences in attitude and perceptions and how successfully they balance their different needs.

Following on from the above there is much you can do yourself to manage the stress in your life positively. Sometimes though we need help to bring stress under control and find more positive ways of responding to it and managing it. We are often too close to the problem and it is therefore helpful to get someone else's perspective on the problem. Also we can find ourselves in habitual ruts repeating the same ways of thinking and feeling and so perpetuating stress and its consequences.

I have taught the principles and techniques of managing stress for many years in my career as a lecturer and helped many people to respond more effectively in coping with stress in their lives. I can help you to identify and review the factors causing stress in your life and to find more effective ways to manage stress so you can have a more fulfilling and joyful life. Hypnotherapy can play a valuable role in this process freeing up old unproductive ways of thinking, feeling and responding.

Part of the solution to dealing with stress is finding effective forms of relaxation. A significant number of people who come to me often complain that they find it difficult to relax. This is sometimes because they have learnt to be in a constant state of agitation which then becomes a habit which it is hard to break out of. Hypnoptherapy can help us to unlearn this habit and to relearn positive approaches to relaxation again. Even if you do not feel that stress is a major issue in your life if you find it difficult to relax you may want to consider a short programme of hypnotherapy.

Assessment for Hypnotherapy for Stress Management and Relaxation

A thorough assessment is essential to determine the factors which are affecting you in order to devise a programme of hypnotherapy tailored to your individual needs. Depending upon whether your main concerns relate to stress, or you wish to just enhance your ability to relax we would focus the assessment and programme accordingly.

An assessment may include some of the following:

  • Considering your own specific motivations.

  • Possible use of some short questionnaires to help in identifying the stressors in your life and relevant perceptions, attitudes and ways of responding.

  • Identifying and reviewing the key stress factors in your life and how you respond to them.

  • Identifying and reviewing your personal stategies and skills related to dealing with stress.

  • Identifying and reviewing your attitude to relaxation and opportunities for relaxation.

  • Considering practical strategies appropriate to you personally which can help you to relax which hypnotherapy can strengthen.

  • Identifying relaxing/calming and relevant successful past general experiences in your life which can be used positively within hypnotherapy.

  • Consider your own perceptions and feelings about yourself.

  • Consideration of how people around you are affecting you eg: sources of support.

Programme of Hypnotherapy for Stress Management and Relaxation

Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to help you to manage stress more effectively and use relaxation productively. This could include:

  • Building upon your motivations. Positive motivations are an important tool for creating change.

  • Learning and reinforcing positive perceptions, attitudes and ways of managing stress and stressful situations in general.

  • Work to give you more awareness and control over your emotions.

  • Replace fearful/anxious thoughts and emotions with calming/relaxing/peaceful ones.

  • Reframe how you perceive, experience and think about problematic situations and issues enabling you to manage them more effectively.

  • Strengthen positive practical strategies and skills for managing stress.

  • Enhance your ability to relax and reinforce effective means of relaxation.

  • Where necessary strengthen your general levels of self-esteem and confidence.

  • If you wish during one of the sessions we will make a recording on CD to complement the live hypnotherapy session. This will be tailored to your needs and can then be used in your own home to reinforce the work we have done in the "live sessions". This has generally been found to be the best way to produce audio recordings that will be effective.

The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.
