Marianthi from France asked the following question:
Q: Dear Sirs, and all those helpers of knowledge in Spirit, I need your views and knowledge to help quiet my heart. I live in France and there is not any access to Spiritual Churches or beliefs. Is one's spirit the same as one's soul? I thought it was and when one left the physical body in death, the spirit (or soul) was taken to the other world and to the light.
Hai: The spirit goes to the light. This is not a matter of being taken; the spirit goes to the light. It is a free soul, a free spirit. It finds its own way home but there can be those who are available to help if need be. But it is a free spirit, an independent spirit and there is no difference between the soul and the spirit.
Q: My second question is: Some religious friends here have argued very forcefully that it was ESSENTIAL that one's body after death was left untouched in repose for 3 days as stated in the Bible and that it was IMPERATIVE that burial in the ground was had, and cremation was the WORST thing ever to do. In fact, if this is not complied to, one becomes more or less "a lost soul" not knowing where to go. Why is this a worry for me personally? Because I have organised that my body be sent to a teaching hospital for students to learn and after it is no longer needed, it is disposed of at the hospital. You see, I find funerals here extremely depressing and melancholic and I just can't bear the thought of that.
Hai: This is a light-hearted person. Many would find it difficult to do what she has done, to volunteer her physical body to study. This calls for a high level of non-attachment to the body. But it is a good sentiment, good impulse that she has. She should rest assured and have no anxiety regarding what these other people say about the necessity of burying the body in the earth; this is of no account.
Her impulse, her view of the human body is the correct one. It is only a vehicle; it is only a manifestation of spirit in the physical world. We have spoken of this at your trance demonstration in Canada. People there asked a similar question about body and spirit and we said to them, spirit animates body, body without spirit is just inert, it is just a mechanism. But spirit animates the mechanism and while your spirit is in your body then you have close affinity to your body, you manifest yourself through your body in the physical plane. But the body is only a manifestation of the spirit animating it; therefore, when the spirit has no longer use for the body the spirit disassociates itself from the body and the body reverts to the elements of the earth.
What would these people wish to do with the physical bodies when they are done with them? They are put into the earth, yes? And maggots eat them, flies buzz around them, the chemical processes break down the body and the body's elements return to the earth. Of what use is the physical body then? Therefore, these people are too attached to their physical body. Rather they should view it as doing them good service while they live on the earth plane and their sprit animates it. Beyond this it serves no purpose for them. They have moved on, they are elsewhere; they have no longer anything to do with the body.
The person who asks this question has the correct view and should rest assured in this, should rest calm and confident in this. It is difficult when she is surrounded by so many with opposing views but she should rest assured and be calm and confident, yes.
A member of our home circle made the following comment.
Q: I suppose it's difficult because some religions don't like cremation and do teach that souls can be lost.
Hai: No. No. They are lost in a simple expression of that word. They are the ones who are lost in a mistaken view. You should know also if you plant roses above ground in the earth in which these physical bodies are decaying and the roses grow beautiful with the elements available to them. (Smiles). How will they repossess their bodies from the roses?
Two questions, also on the theme of death, followed on:
Q: Is it possible for someone to die and not realise they are dead?
Hai: Yes this can happen sometimes but it is rare. There are those who seek them out who are willing to help them, to shine a light for them, someone who will reach out to them. You should have no fear on this count.
Q: I heard recently that someone who had a heart transplant was suddenly able to do things that the donor had been able to do. Is it possible for a donor's gift to be transferred in this way?
Hai: Some memory may be transferred. Your bodies retain the code. Your bodies have the imprint of the code of your abilities within and sometimes this may be transferred to another. But you should not view it as this artist's gift or that artist's gift for the gift is the gift.
Q: If we can sometimes see spirit lights why can't we see the spirit light that dwells within the person? Is it because their body is too dense?
Hai: Yes, because the physical person is an interface between the physical and the spiritual. The spiritual and the physical are blended together in a physical expression of life. Whereas when you see spirit being or manifestation of spirit being you see a spiritual energy, an energy which may be perceived with the inner eye. And therefore it is easier to see this if you have awakened your inner eye. But it is no easy matter to see spirit entity of person in physical body for the blending of the spiritual and physical is such that there is a oneness between them and therefore it is difficult to separate out, to see the spiritual energy, the spiritual life-force.
Q: I've been reading a book that said that it was never intended that the mind and the senses would have control and that the soul should have been in control, but for some reason the soul has been suppressed. Is that true?
Hai: It is an over generalisation. We would not take issue with the main point of this person, but it is an over generalisation. For it is rather like the analogy of the cloak we have used before. It is like, when we take on a new earthly form, it is as if we don a cloak, a cloak that shrouds our soul, our spirit while we are on the physical plane and it is this cloak that others see. Indeed it is this cloak which we ourselves see when we look at ourselves through a mirror or when we look down at our hands and our limbs. So we look down and we see the cloak, the outer manifestation. I would suggest that it might be useful to think on this cloak, to think of this cloak as being capable of different manifestations itself.
We may think of a cloak where the cloak is of a lightness, of a fabric which is very light so that his owner is hardly aware that they are wearing it, because it is so light and so easy to carry on them, you understand? I would liken this situation to someone who is very spiritually developed, who has a body, a cloak, but this is no hindrance to them. They are able to express themselves fully through this cloak. This cloak does not hamper the manifestation of their spirit.
But we could think of another situation where a person is wearing a very heavy cloak indeed, a heavy cloak which weighs them down, a cloak which they are so conscious of, because of its weight, because it hampers their movement, it hampers their communication and their ability to display themselves. Therefore I would suggest that if we think about this heavy cloak. It is perhaps the situation of the majority, because the situation of the majority is that they wear their bodies heavy to the point that their bodies dictate their lives rather than their spirit dictating their lives. Do you find this analogy useful?
We become so identified with our bodies that our bodies become a part of us. Our bodies feel an oneness with us. If we are able to bring about a great harmony then this is no problem for our bodies mirror our souls, our spirits, and our inner hearts. They display what is within and manifest what is within and translate what is within. But if our bodies and souls do not achieve this harmony our souls may be hampered indeed in displaying themselves, in displaying their inner qualities to the our world through the medium of our bodies because our bodily needs, our bodily desires, our bodily excitements prevent this from happening to its full extent and therefore hinder its communication.
A member of the Home Circle then asked a follow on question:
Q: Is there a way in which we would know how much we are expressing our spirit?
Hai: You know if you look within. You know if you feel your own heart, your own heart beat. If you touch your heart, you know.
Q: How much of our personality that we have now is part of our normal spirit?
Hai: (Smiling) "Normal", as opposed to "abnormal" spirit. You are much more than you know. You are all much more than you can possibly know in your present form, in your present life. For we have all lived many lives my friends and we have all suffered much and we have all developed much accordingly. Therefore you are much more than you know now, but on your return to the Spirit Land you will at the right time become aware of the richness which is you, the totality which is you.
It is not that these things are two separate things or many separate things. It is rather that you are like a stem coming out from the parent plant and expressing itself in its own form in the world. But it does not lose its Oneness with the parent stem, the parent plant. And therefore this is a bit like you and your totality, the richness that is you. You have shot out a stem for this lifetime to experience the world in a particular way, to manifest in a particular way, to test yourselves in a particular way, to display yourselves in a particular way. And with this particularity in this life time you have many experiences, many developments, much movement forward. This you will incorporate into your parent plant.
Q: Has the information that has been presented regarding souls been simplified so that we can attempt to comprehend them? Something is bugging me about “souls” and I can’t easily describe what it is. I believe that a “soul” is not as straight-forward as it’s been made out.
Soul idea number one:
People talk about about souls in a way that suggests they are individual things. For instance: “the soul joined the baby at 4 months of age”. That indicates the soul is a body of some kind, Like an “alien” being that merges with another being (the human animal form). If this is the case – are humans' bodies designed to merge with a soul? Can a human “host” live without a soul? Are there people who are soulless? Can a soul join with ..say... A robot?
Soul idea number two:
We also hear about a Great Spirit/Oneness. The Great Spirit is in EVERYTHING. In truth there is ONLY this one Great Spirit. So, if a baby was born, would it automatically act as a vacum that “sucks” a soul into it. Let me give you an example...If the wind represents the great-One-Spirit of self-awareness, and a plastic bag represents a body, if I hold the plastic bag up in the sky, it fills with wind. So the plastic bag gets a spirit within it.
That answers the population question – because no matter how many bags you hold up, the wind will always fill them all; the Great Spirit never “runs out”. The “ego” self happens when the wind in the bag considers itself separately to the other wind. But the separateness is an illusion and at death the wind from the bag can re-intergrate into the other wind.
My question is, which one of the two soul ideas is most accurate? Personally, the idea that feels right for me, is number two. If comparing to a radio set, with the Great Spirit/Consciousness representing radio waves, option one would be like saying: “the radio waves choose to enter the radio” whereas option two would say: “you build a radio, and if it has the ability to pick up the omni-present radio waves, and it’s tuned right, then it will” I think what I mean is, a body doesn’t contain a soul, no more than a radio contains radio waves. We are like radio sets. How accurate is this idea?
Hai: Well we give Dale a symbol, which we have given you all before. We give you the image of the sea and its waves and each of the crests of these waves is like a human being on the earth plane. Each of these crests indeed is like a spirit anywhere in the spirit planes also. The mighty sea is the One Mind of course. So the individual crests of the waves will imagine themselves to be independent entities. Yet the very ground of their being is within the One Mind of the ocean. This is some similarity to Dales second hypothesis, I believe. But yet it does not follow as he says when physical death of body comes it is destruction of spirit soul. For he imagines it is as if the Great Spirit fills a human form and so becomes individualised in this form then dissipates on the death of the physical form and returns to the One. He has not allowed for the fact that the individual spirit is already existing within the One Mind prior to inhabiting human body. So in a sense first hypothesis is also of some merit (Laughing). But we say to him that the confusion of his mind over this is because he approaches this problem with his mind, with his rational intellect. You may say to him (smiling) that it is his rational intellect, which has its limitations.
He then laughed heartily and said:
Hai: In order to truly understand this thing, which he wishes to understand, he would need to attain the broader perspective of enlightenment.
