More often than not, when we have spoken to Hai about Ultimate Truth or Reality he will refer to the "One Mind" or some variation of this eg: the "One Heart". However, we have found that he has varied the terms which he has used in the interests of relating to his audience. Thus, you may have noticed in some of his sayings which we quote in the Welcome Page, that he quite often uses the term "God". This reflects the backgrounds of the audience to whom many of these sayings were delivered ie: it was in the context of a Christian Spiritualist Church.
From time to time we have had lengthy discussions with Hai and some of our other spirit visitors about the role of religion and its relationship to Ultimate Truth or Reality.
Hai suggested that the following communication would be useful for the website. Eileen had been reading some lectures from a medium who had channelled a spirit guide sometime between the years 1950 and 1970. One lecture talked about Jesus and said that Jesus had more of God within him than any other spirit ever had and as such we must be grateful to him. The guide added that though there was no need to worship or pray to him, unless we were grateful to him we would never be enlightened because we would still have 'blocks'. Eileen acknowledged that there could have been some misunderstanding in the translation of this communication. Nevertheless, because it seemed contrary to what Hai had always taught she asked for his comments. Often when Hai wishes to make a point he will remain silent for a minute or two before he answers a question. This was one of these times. After a minute or two Hai replied:
Hai: I have spoken. (He then continued). But the sermon can be spoken also.None of this is important. None of this is of any great significance. The Being, the Source, the Manifestation is as much within that crystal which is in front of you as it is within anything else. As it is in you, as it is in the petals of a flower, as it is in the rabbit that skips and hops over the moorland. There is nothing but vast Oneness everywhere to be found, vast Consciousness, vast Being. You only limit the vision because of such speculations as this person (the medium or guide) has speculated upon. If you could still your minds, my friends, if you could make them quiet, truly make them quiet, in an instant you would see revealed before your eyes all the Reality and you are that Reality. And you would see as you look around you the reflection of your own reality just as your reality is reflected when others see you.
Therefore, there is only vast Oneness, vast Consciousness, the One Mind.It is only because people do not believe this that they cause such mischief to each other, for they imagine all kinds of things. They imagine that this person is more enlightened than that person. This is the seed of all misfortune for it is only a small hop, skip and a jump (smiles) like the rabbit, yes, to, this person is more righteous than this one, this person more worthy than this one and so on. You see that? Therefore, you should see all as vast equality, brotherhood and sisterhood of equality, vast Oneness, one blood flowing through all our veins and through the veins of the universe. But how many truly believe this? They make their minds dissect, to separate this from that, to set apart this from that. But this is the seed of error, seed of error.
Q: The guide did say that we all had the seed of God in us but that Jesus had more and was able to manifest more of the God that is in us all.
Hai: The essence is what is important. Therefore, if I pour out orange for you all and, Eileen, I fill your glass full and David's glass half full and so on. Do you have something fundamentally different in front of you?
Q: No. But some of us would have more.
Hai: You have orange juice. That is all there is to it, orange juice.
Q: So it doesn't matter that one has more than another then?
Hai: It truly can be that some souls, at that particular point of their evolution, at that particular point in their path, may manifest (smiles) the orange juice more fluently but that is all. Such things are error that you have been given; such things are unhelpful, and such things are without merit for they sow the seeds of dichotomy, of splitting this from that, of imaginings, superstition.
Another member of the group joined in the conversation.
Q: It's easy though to see how people think themselves different from others because of the variation of opinions and such like?
Hai: They seek, my friend, to be the big 'I Am' (smiles). Even those who seek such pious things, who manifest an outer display of piety, yet by their very motivation to be correct, to be following the "right path", they seek the big 'I Am'. Therefore, better for them to think; I am a humble soul in great error (laughs). Who would they act against then my friend, if they thought of themselves in this way, a humble soul in great error? Would not the world be a more peaceful place? It is the big 'I am's' who wage war on the earth and on each other, for they have the certainty of 'correct-hood'; they have the certainty of being "right", of "righteousness". Righteousness is a wicked sin. I do not mean that literally, but you follow my meaning? And those who can understand that righteousness is a "wicked sin" can understand where I am coming from.
Q: I accept what you say and have always thought in the way you've taught but when I read the lecture I wondered whether my view of Jesus was too fixed. I see him as a good man but I see other religious leaders as good men too.
Hai: Love Jesus, yes. Why not love him? But you do not need to see him in the way you have read about.
Q: Is the distortion due to the blend of energies between the medium's mind and the guide?
Hai: The medium's mind has to be used in its frameworks and structure; therefore, we are limited or constrained. We have obstacles to overcome and we are not always able to overcome those obstacles. Therefore, the message is coloured by the philosophy or structure of the medium's mind. This can be a difficulty, yet we must use what is available to us. Communication is never easy, but we believe it is best to make use of what is available than have no communication. But those who give messages, of whatever kind, should be aware that their own minds might colour the message. Therefore, this is an inevitable problem, constriction. But yet we persevere; for we believe communication between our worlds is for the greater good.
Q: A lot of the things he said were good and acceptable, just what we'd expect from you.
Hai: Yes. So you divert the flow of the channel, yes, divert the flow of that which you cannot relate to, which you feel is erroneous, down one channel, then accept what you in your good mind believe to be wisdom. Let that be directed down the other channel, the channel of acceptance. You my friends cannot avoid the decisions which you must make with your own mind, your own soul, as to what is edifying, what is error. This I have said often both in relation to what I say or what anyone else says.
Hai then laughed and told us what Davia had said to him.
Hai: That's right, old Hai. Tell them to pull the rope on your trap if they do not believe what you say. And you (Hai) disappear through the floor. (Laughter)
Q: The book is suggesting that you don't have a separate soul. It seems in contradiction to what we do here.
Hai: If you made a knot in a piece of rope and you could make many such knots in this piece of rope. A simple knot with the rope continuing from each end of the knot. And so you could have many such knots. The rope is like the One Mind, the knot is like each and every one of you individually. If you were to undo the knot, could you say that things were different fundamentally, could you say the Essence had changed fundamentally?
Q: No.
Hai: No.
Q: So in that sense then.....
Hai: You are the One Mind.
Q: But if we keep our memory and personality to some extent.....
Hai: All is illusion.
Q: That's an illusion?
Hai: All is illusion. I will give you another parallel. The vast silver mirror. And as you look in this silver mirror you see all manner of things, the story of the world unfolding, the actions of humankind mirrored in this mirror. Yet all is contained within the mirror, yet all is illusion in one sense for the only thing that endures, the only thing that has its unchanging being is the surface and depth of the mirror, the One Mind. All other things come and go within the depth and surface of the One Mind. You are the One Mind.
Q: So for those who do manage to progress as far as they can, do they loose all their thoughts and memories, and personalities that they've had on the earth plane? If it's all illusion, do they just drop that illusion?
Hai: They are then in a state of being which is beyond words.
Q: It feels to me that we become almost extinct in the way we know ourselves now.
Hai: You will be more alive than you have ever been alive, more active than you have ever been active.
Q: Would we be still capable of individual thought?
Hai: (Smiles) What makes you think you are capable of independent thought now. (Laughs)
Q: Are you saying we are not capable of independent thought?
Hai: All is illusion.
Hai: Water has much symbolism. It is clear. Clear as the purity of the soul. It is gentle. Gentle as compassion. It is strong. Strong as a thunderstorm. It is placid unless it is aroused through the elements. It mirrors the whole of life in other words. But it also mirrors the deeper meaning of life. It symbolises the One Mind, the essence within all of us, behind all of us, that sustains all of us. We are like droplets in its mighty ocean. Yet the droplets are still present in the ocean. They do not disappear. They are not lost. So, we should not think of the One Mind as being a great furnace which consumes us. We should not think of the Great Mind as an anonymous void in which we all disappear. The One Mind is all loving, is all compassionate, is all reaching, all embracing, all heart. Within this Heart we exist, we have our being. We cannot disappear. We are eternal. We have an eternal identity with the One Mind. We are of its nature. We reflect its glory, its love, it compassion, its creativity. So water has much symbolism within it. It can be used at different levels. At the level of everyday life. At the level of the deepest reality.
Q: What is the ultimate purpose than people are at the highest vibration?
Hai: Oneness with the Essence. Oneness with your whole, the Universal Spirit, Universal Mind. But you do not disappear in this Mind. As I have said before it is merely a stronger, closer recognition, harmony of purpose, of love, of mind and heart. When I speak of lower and higher realms these are not useful words in many ways as in essence you are as close to the Eternal Mind now as you ever will be. This may sound a paradox but it is the truth. What you lack now is the awareness of closeness. As we progress the awareness of our closeness, our identity with the One Mind, our harmony with it, grows. We become more sensitive to It. To our Essential Nature. This is the purpose of our journey on the earthly and spiritual realms. To reidentify with the One Heart, the One Mind. We rediscover ourselves.
Q: How accurate is the biblical Jesus?
Hai: It would be better to focus on the message of Jesus rather than read too much about the physical aspects of his life .Jesus was a great teacher one of many who has come to the earth to convey the teaching the Great Truth .Teachers come and use the form of religion which they are born into but the Truth is greater than any one religion. As I have said before, no religion has ownership of the Truth. The truth cannot be owned by religion. The truth informs religion to a greater or lesser extent and to the extent that these religions are faithful to the Truth they reflect it accurately or not, but the important thing is that there is One Truth,One Reality behind all religions. It is a great misfortune that some religions, or the way they have been used, try to lay claim, sovreignty to the truth. The Truth is. The One Reality is . The one reality makes all these religions possible.
Q: Please can you explain duality?
Hai: Duality is an notion. Duality does not exist fundamentally in the Essential Nature of things .There is the One Heart but you must of course not think of this as a concrete heart, but figuratively you understand. But there is One Heart,One Mind. Call it what you will. One Essense that pervades all the universes, all existence, the physical realms and the spiritual realms. There is nowhere that is, that is not pervaded by this One Heart, One Mind. It sustains all. It is the foundation af all. Without It nothing is. It pervades all. Duality is an illusion within the One Mind. Duality is necessary for creation. Duality is necessary for the kind of life you exist in, but it is a convenience because at the most deep level it does not exist there is only the Mind, One Heart, the One Essense, the One Being. It is deep I know and it is not possible to grasp this with your minds ,intellects, because your intellects by their very nature are dualistic. They tend to see things in terms of this and that. You may try with your intellect to bring things together to understand the concept of the One Mind, but you will strive in vane. You may approach It with your minds and try and capture It with your minds .The One Mind must be experienced directly to understand It, become at one with It, to know that we are already born with It .
Q: Are we influenced by it?
Hai: You talk of duality again. As I say, there is no duality. If you are influenced by the One Mind you are thinking of the One Mind on the one hand and yourself on the other. But it does not work like this because at your deepest essense you are the One Mind. But you can only approach this through looking in. Looking in and turning your sight around to yourself. If you look back into yourself you will discover the One Mind. But once you have discovered It nothing has changed .
Q: What is the essential nature of existence?
Hai: The essential nature of existence, of our being, of the universe is that there is at one level everlasting change, eternal change, yet at the other level, the level within, there is never ending Sameness, Suchness, Identity. Therefore these two things, these two characteristics of Suchness, Sameness, Identity and change, the ever changing forms around us, these two aspects are as One when viewed from the mountain top. (Hai is reluctant to speak in this way as he says to do so implies a duality which has no place in Reality.)
Q: Is the spirit world a mere shadow of the physical world, or is it the other way around -- is the physical world a mere shadow of the spirit world? Or, which is closest to the truth?
Hai: The spirit land is a mere shadow of the physical world and the physical world is a mere shadow of the spiritual world. There is a Oneness in all things. What would you have me say; this part or that part of the vast Oneness? If you could even speak in this way, which you cannot, but humour me (smiling), because if I say this part of the vast Oneness, the Suchness, is more real than that part of the vast Oneness, the Suchness, it makes no sense, makes no sense. And we cannot even talk of this and that when we speak of the One Mind.
A group member commented that she had read in a book that the physical world was based upon the spirit world.
Hai: There is One Nature and all is based on this One Nature, whether in the spirit or in the physical. One Nature prevails. You trouble your minds with all manner of things; your poor minds you trouble them so when all is simplicity. When you split your minds with some of your questions you give yourselves anxiety, confusion, when there is simple Essence within, behind, underneath this question; simple One Truth, One Essence. Some questions are useful to ask, others can create confusion in the mind. Yet even in asking the question it points to the Truth, the Oneness, the Suchness, the underlying Reality. It is like, if I give you an analogy: what is the most important part of the football the outer skin, or the inner skin? What is your answer? How can you split outer skin and inner skin? You cannot.
Q: A passage in a book implies that not all our soul energy incarnates to the earth, but that there is a residual amount that always remains in the spirit realm. It also says that our soul energy can split and incarnate into parallel lives to advance the development of the soul.
Hai: Hai answered with a smile: When you have heard "the stone cockerel crow" you will know the answer to this one. There is not much merit or usefulness in dwelling upon such a question because the One Mind is Eternal. It is all embracing. It is all reaching. It is as deep as you can think. It is as extensive as you can think and you my friends are at one with this One Mind. What does it gain you to talk and think in terms of splitting yourself up into multidimensional beings; beings who live partly in heaven, beings that live partly on the earth? What does it gain you, my friends? From the point of view of experience as human beings you are here, yes? You are living your life. But you must live your life here to the full within this very moment, within this very second of existence. And yet even this is talking too much in terms of time. But even in this instant you have all eternity before you. You are your Eternal Nature in this very moment, this very split second of time, and therefore to speculate in other ways creates a fragmented view, which is not helpful.
Assuredly you have all lived many lives and you have all learnt from these many lives and we have internalised, we have grown in our knowledge, in our understanding, through much pain sometimes, but also we learn through joy as well. It should not all be about pain this life of ours on this earthly plain. But we learn from these earthly lives and we grow in abundance through these experiences in these earthly realms.
Yet we also learn from the spiritual realms, as we live in our spiritual realms as well. But to speak in terms of splitting all these things is not helpful, is not conducive and does not get us very far. The important thing is that we are walking onwards, we are growing to maturity, we are returning home to our True Nature, which we have in truth never left. And yet we must recognise this True Nature and we must learn to express It to the full. Therefore, I do not find it helpful to encourage you to speculate about these questions of being here and there at the same time and living here and there at the same time and so on. What good will it do you to think this way? You people of the earth plane, you have many curiosities, many questions, many speculations, which you would like to know the answers to, but does it help you in your development? I think not. There are those who use very sophisticated, very detailed theories of existence and yet I say to you also that existence, the Essential Reality, is something which you may access in this instant and all the theories and speculations, no matter how elaborate, no matter how detailed, will not add one iota to your experience of this Reality which is you.
Q: But people pick up books and read these theories, Hai and it is natural that they will want to check it out.
Hai: The Buddha spoke of skilful means. Skilful means is what advances us, what brings human joy and comfort, what brings wisdom, compassion, and love. Therefore we would encourage you to focus upon skilful means, which bring these things about, rather than to over speculate on some of these theories. They do not advance the loving compassionateness of the human species, of us ourselves as spirit beings for that matter. They do not advance us in compassion. But if we can only understand our fundamental Oneness; that if we hack off the branch of a tree we hack off the arm of our brother, for we are all of the same tree. We are all of the same tree so to damage one part of this tree, we damage ourselves, all of us. If we can only understand truly the depth of this Oneness amongst us, within us, around us, then this would encourage us all to look with eyes of compassion on our brother and sister. For this is our nature my friends. This is the nature of all of us: that we are seeds from the same fruit possessing a common heart, a common thread, and common lifeblood pumping through our veins. We are all of the One Suchness. But you must question me further if you wish to on this. If you feel there is something you would wish to know.
Q: Well I’ve also read books that suggest similar things and although I do not believe it would help me to live a better life to know these things, once it’s been read it makes one think about it.
Hai: Yes you think about it because it spares you thinking about the next time that someone snubs you and you are not able to respond in a compassionate way. Yes?
Q: Do you mean it takes up your energy that could be used for more positive things?
Hai: Yes, it takes up valuable energy. But you see it is not as simple as those say who portray this idea. For although it is a complicated idea, this being part of you here and there at once, yes, it is a complicated idea, but yet it is not complicated enough my friends and indeed it is too complicated in many ways, for the Truth, the Reality, is simple. It is like, you see, I keep saying to you that we are all of the One Mind. Now this is a final statement. There is no room for question or discussion or speculation. And yet we do speculate and discuss because our minds cannot embrace the reality of this. Our minds say: “Ah, so there is a One Mind” and your friends have come to me in the past and said: “Ah, Hai there is the One Mind, yes? We understand this. So — where is this One Mind? Is this One Mind equally all around the universe? Is this One Mind in this place and not that place? Are we all equally of this One Mind?” You see my problem? The One Mind is a final statement, which embraces and nullifies all these questions, for the One Mind simply is, and we are that Isness.
So I tell you another little story: When I was on the earth plane we had many discussions. They were philosophical monks you see, much prone to giving these kind of questions which you are posing to me tonight. So, regarding the One Mind for instance, they would say: “Well if all people are of the One Mind, if all people are of Essential Purity, where does the One Mind go when the worst criminal who has committed despicable acts goes into the deepest hells?” And so I would say to them: “The One Mind is in hell”.
And so we have the One Mind that lives many different existences. It sustains, It embraces, It is within, It is the Essence, It is the Isness of all things. Wherever you look on this earth, in the far galaxies of your physical universe or in the far reaches of the spirit realms, there is only the One Mind and yet this One Mind manifests itself in a hundred million thousand ways and one of these ways is you. And so we may be approaching something of what you posed to me initially, that we have one consciousness but expressing itself in different consciousness. So now where does it get you to think: "Ah, I have a consciousness here. I have one in heaven, I have one in hell, and with all these consciousnesses there is the One Mind. We will tie ourselves up in knots. And I have already said too much; for "the stone cockerel crows" would be truer to the mark.
Q: So why do guides communicate this?
Hai: There are guides who are of philosophical bent, who wish to try to convey something of the detail of existence. But we would question the usefulness of this for the reasons that we have spoken. We too, are of philosophical bent, but our philosophy is more of practical wisdom. Those of you who come here many times, I’m sure, will have reached this conclusion, that our emphasis, our concern, is with practical wisdom, practical philosophy, which will advance us along the road to enlightenment, to spiritual fulfilment and development. Therefore, we do not disparage the writings, the communications of other people, but we would argue that the emphasis for your world and you all needs to be on a practical wisdom. The concept of living here and there at the same time serves no practical benefit or use in your day to day lives. It does not advance you. It does not help you to deal with the problems of life. What would you say to yourselves: “Oh I’m having a hard time here, but never mind I’m really up there”. (Laughter). Yes, you see it does not help you in terms of your day to day living experience and the practical problems that you have to confront. It is hard enough to deal with these things, but the consequences of being elsewhere at the same time is probably just going to confuse rather than help you.
You must live your lives to the full. You must give your lives to the full, to others with not a thought for yourself, which is what you were speaking of downstairs, Helen when you spoke of your Methodist man. (Helen had been talking about the Minister at her daughters wedding before the sitting). He was able to go with the flow, to give to the moment and this is what we must all try to do though it is difficult for us on occasions as it is for him also, but we give to the moment. We give ourselves fully to the moment without second thought, without thought of self. We are then one hundred percent attention to those to whom we speak, to whom we interact, yes. (Smiling) All ears.
